Thread West (Serial Stitcher)

Two years of serial stitching have resulted in this labor of love paying homage to Melbourne’s west.

Walk in and around Deane’s needlepoint canvases where she explores her contradictory personality, exposing both order and chaos. One side is neat, precise and contained, and the other, messy and chaotic. Through the use of iconic urban/industrial imagery rendered in thread, this is Deane’s ode to her beloved home turf.

Contrast, colour and texture, intricacy and monotony, are key themes of this work. Photography and thread are combined to create needlepoint images featuring familiar landmarks of Melbourne’s west.

Deane subverts the domestic medium of needlepoint to explore dichotomies between the heavy-duty and the hand-made; between cold, rigid industrial materials and the warm malleability of the thread; between the ‘masculine’ world of industry, urban decay and the feminine’ world of craft.
